Andrew Poirier: Wilfrid Laurier University Student Passionate about Social Work and Community Engagement

Andrew Poirier, a dedicated student at Wilfrid Laurier University, is a compassionate individual with a strong passion for social work and community engagement. Throughout his academic journey, Andrew has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others, particularly in the realm of mental wellness and accessibility.

During the summer, Andrew embarked on a meaningful initiative aimed at supporting mental wellness for Canadian veterans suffering from PTSD. He organized a birdhouse fundraiser, utilizing his creativity to craft unique birdhouses from upcycled materials that were originally destined for landfills. The proceeds from this endeavor were directed towards experts at Wounded Warriors Canada, specifically for their pet therapy program. This therapeutic humanitarian activity allowed Andrew to blend his love for creativity with his desire to contribute to a cause close to his heart.

Notably, Andrew was able to forge a valuable partnership with his local Legion, which further bolstered the success of the fundraiser. The Legion showcased the birdhouses for sale, resulting in a tremendous response from the community. People were not only generous with their financial contributions but also with their donations of license plates to sustain the fundraiser. Andrew’s efforts went beyond financial support; he played a vital role in destigmatizing mental illness within the community and promoting kindness and understanding.

While Andrew is not directly working with individuals affected by PTSD, his dedication to supporting their mental health is evident and commendable. He finds pride in knowing that he contributes to the well-being of those struggling with mental health issues, showcasing a deep sense of empathy and understanding.

Looking ahead, Andrew plans to continue his philanthropic efforts by organizing and preparing for future birdhouse fundraisers. Additionally, he is eager to explore and engage in various other humanitarian initiatives during his time at Laurier. His dedication to community engagement and social work will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on the lives of many, creating a more inclusive and empathetic society for all.
