Michelle Mahoney

1991 TFHA Alum

Current Job

University of King’s Accessibility Officer

Michelle worked at Dalhousie University for the 24 years and accepted a new position with the University of Kings College as their first full-time Accessibility Officer starting in January 2023. She sits on the Board of Directors for Easter Seals Nova Scotia, and Easter Seals Board of Canada as the NS representative. Michelle has completed the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification course and completed the National Exam.

Active TFHA volunteer and program supporter Michelle Mahoney shares insight on her involvement with TFHA’s Provincial Interview Committees.

How long have you been volunteering on a pic? And with which provinces?

Over 25 years, mostly in NS, but in the last couple of years since interviews were virtual I have interviewed candidates from Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

What do you enjoy about participating in the process and/or why do you choose to volunteer with TFHA?

It is great to give back to an organization that literally changed my life, and the candidates we interview are amazing young people who have experienced challenges but are so dedicated to their passions in wanting to make change or differences in the world.

Would you recommend others get involved (is there anything you would like to share about the experience)?

It always is the coolest day ever and to get to meet the leaders of tomorrow and to be part of something so special in the name of Terry Fox is one of the highlights of the year for me.

Michelle Mahoney was born with Arthrogryposis, which is a lack of muscle in joints of the body. She has limited mobility in her arms, hands, and knees, and she was born with clubbed feet and a dislocated hip. The doctors told her parents she would probably never walk. Michelle graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1995 with what she likes to refer to as a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Independence (sociology).

Michelle is an avid surfer, enjoys downhill skiing and waterskiing, and enjoys spending time with her husband, family, friends, and her dog Gus. Her life motto is “I can do anything, it just might take me a little longer. I am unstoppable.”
